Self nurturing is the relationship you create with yourself of being loving to yourself. Giving to yourself as much as you give to others. Self nurturing also increases our value and worth as women. Self nurturing unlocks our feminine essence and personal power.Many women have put their emphasis on giving to others, but giving and receiving our own nourishment can sometimes be difficult especially due to societal and cultural programming. It is only when women feel over-exhausted, bitter, or resentful, they seek out how to start caring more for themselves.

Here are a few tips to carry you into the holiday season to reduce any stress you may be feeling not having normalcy with the holiday season, to keep you calm and centered, and hopefully fill any void that this year has presented and how it is affecting the holidays.

Most importantly remember to be compassionate and gentle with yourself right now. Joy is found within your heart's calling, your self care and in the little things you can do right now to nurture your body, mind, home and everything you love. Ultimately, the more we self nurture, we create more meaning and purpose in one's life and our happiness will have a chain reaction to the one's around us we love most and who care for our well - being.

How to be Resilient in the Face of Change.

Change is a part of life and as humans we either embrace it or fear it. For some of us, change means getting out of our comfort zone or maybe loosing something we had before. It also might mean something exciting is to come and we just haven’t learned how to breathe into yet. We need to un push the pause button.

Covid times is our biggest experience in which we are all dealing with both personal and collective change. Many have lost businesses, jobs, health insurance, loved ones, their familiar routine, but some have bought houses, some are moving out of state, some are starting new businesses and on some level we are all changing inside, deepening our relationship to self through more self - care, our standards may be shifting, relationships are changing, or we are able to carve out more family time.

What keeps me going when I am grieving a loss of something I have been so familiar with is the belief, faith and hope that the universe is conspiring to make my vision a reality. Having trust in myself and my purpose. I trust that no matter what we will all be ok. I see the change as a teacher and an opportunity for growth and expansion. And it is a mirror to our next level of healing or service to others. We are all going deeper right now and really shifting on many areas of personal development and I feel like I am a catalyst for that change and transformation for the clientele I seek to find me.

It may be scary at first, this idea of change, as we hold on to many beliefs and behaviors that give us a sense of love, comfort and belonging. But I can promise you that those beliefs/behaviors are our allies, and the more we flow and build on our ability to love and care for ourselves, we start to initiate new beliefs and behaviors as we step into a new version of ourselves something that has existed already, we just didn’t know it.

Letting go of a space that was my practice and identity for 8 years, was a bittersweet experience and a myriad of physical and mental emotions, but I have done it once before so I know I can do it again. Change. It is not a goodbye. It is a reinvention, an expansion, a new offering. And perhaps the change is needed for my clients. Life brings to us new people and new situations for many reasons.

Self Awareness to reduce stress is the secret to reducing bloat, aiding digestion, more energy and weight loss.

In my practice as a Certified Lymphatic Therapist, many of my clients call me to see if I can help them with their bloat, cellulite, detoxification, feeling of sluggishness and weight gain. My answer is this: I can help you with resetting your lymph system by helping you calm your nervous system. But this will only be symptomatic as you need to address what the underlying issue is of why the lymphatic system went in disarray. Although, lymphatic drainage helps with excess protein and water removal through detoxification, hint: this is why it is important to drink
water daily, it will retreat back if you are not becoming more aware of the root cause of this imbalance.

In teaching my clients about stress as one cause of why their lymphatic system is sluggish, it can be for a variety of reasons. Stress can result from our thoughts, our emotions, the environment we are in and when we eat. Stress can be a result of our beliefs that have created of who we are which also has a direct impact on our metabolism.
Stress can also come in other ways like an impacted lymphatic system or trauma or underlying issue.
There many ways we can have a powerful effect on reducing stress, anxiety and emotions, some of these that I will teach later.

But one way we can create a relaxation effect and a reduced stress response is through our Central Nervous System, specifically the Autonomic Nervous System. Our ANS is compromised of Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems. When we are in a flight or fight stage the SNS gets triggered. So when we eat, the digestion system will turn off which also cause excess water to accumulate in the system. When we are in a calm, mindful, aware environment our PNS get is turned on allowing everything to systemically flow better in the body aiding digestion. There are many tips in helping an individual become more self aware of their stress state, internal and external, and employing ways to slow down.

Just think, if you slow down for 20 min you begin the journey of self awareness with mindful eating. AS eating is required for our energy and nutrition and to sustain life, we know that we need to do this throughout the day. This is the perfect start to learning how to be present, slow down and develop intuition in your body. YOUR gift : a flatter stomach, optimized digestion, feeling lighter and more energy to want to eat differently, and becoming more in tune to your body which will ultimately reap many great rewards. So let's look at the 20 min meal. Most of us eat fast, we eat in the car, eat in our offices, rushing from one place to another. Well at least that was before Covid. Now many of us are at home and able to guide our nutrition and meal better. But if you are still in that mindset.

Try the technique below, THE 20 MIN MEAL.

Next time you sit to eat. Watch a clock or set a timer. If it takes you 5 min, than the next time increase to 8 min.
Do this every meal or every day for the same meal until you get to 20 min. Put on some pretty music. Light a candle. Preferably turn off electronics. Take slow intentional breaths and put your fork down. I challenge you to do this for 4-7 days. Whatever feels right for you. Then send me feedback. Dry Brushing Benefits and Tutorial to Enhance your Lymphatic System and Skin

I get asked a lot by my clients about what they can do to enhance their lymphatic health in the interim of sessions. Ladies, your in luck, as there is a wonderful tool and self-care regimen called Dry Brushing. Your probably familiar with the basic bath brush that has a wooden handle that people use in the shower to exfoliate their skin. Well this is the same idea, but with the intention of stimulating the lymphatic system. Dry Brushing is becoming a popular trend, as women are now seeing the importance of rejuvenating the skin’s dermis by clearing out toxins as a way to maintain health and beauty.

It is the same idea when we exfoliate the face to clean of impurities after a cleanser and toner. Dry brushing for the body is a way we can exfoliate the whole body and help reduce stagnancy and inflammation from our very delicate lymph vessel system.

We have many vital organs that are responsible for detox including the liver, kidneys, skin and colon. The skin being the largest. Stimulating the lymphatic system through dry brushing helps remove dead skin cell and makes the skin smoother. It helps to improve circulation, reduce stress and provides a relaxing way to connect with a very essential process of the body in removing metabolic wastes.

Whether for health maintenance, reducing water in the body, reducing the appearance of cellulite, lymphatic dry brushing feels good and makes your skin look great.

Our lymph system has no pump and transports lymph via tiny vessels called a lymphangion. These tiny vessels create natural contractions or peristalsis of the smooth muscle which influences lymphangion motoricity. Exercise, rebound jumping, diaphragmatic

breathing are also wonderful ways to get the lymph system to circulate.

Our lymph can be compromised by trauma, stress, emotional health, diet, tight clothes and other lifestyle factors. A sluggish system can also mean low immunity, lymphatic drainage with dry brushing can also help stimulate the immune system, which includes the thymus, spleen and tonsils. Having a strong immune system will combat infection, reduce colds and sinus issues and be a preventative against disease and free radicals in the body.

Your lymphatic system lies right under the skin, stimulating the lymph vessels is with a very light and gentle pressure. Think of the weight of a nickel on the skin or petting a cat, that is why the act of dry brushing creates an optimal tool for enhancing lymphatic health.

Some precautions of dry brushing are the following; when you have a rash or other breakage of skin or if you have sensitive skin. If you have a health issues that affects your skin, perhaps consult with your doctor or just work in localized areas to begin and always start light and slow. You can build up at a faster firmer rhythm over time. Be discerning, You can drink a cup of water before and after. Make sure not to use your dry brush on wet skin.

Most dry brush tutorials say to brush distal to proximal, which means brushing from foot to groin or hand to underarm. I think these methods are fine, however, in my lymphatic training I prefer to brush the reverse which is proximal to distal. This means open the drainage areas of the body before brushing lymph fluid into them.

1. Stimulate your neck by placing both hands under the ear and lightly brush to collarbone. Then with gentle pulsations toward sternum in the hollow of collarbone. You can do this manual or do this with a light bristle brush (vegan or vegetable material preferably.)

2. Start with Left side of body: Stimulate the left side of upper chest (use circles), then left under arm area. And then brush from tip of fingers to the under arm in a circumferential manner.

3. Repeat this on the Right side: Stimulate the right side of upper chest (use circles), then right under arm area and then brush from tip of fingers to the under arm in a circumferential manner.

4. For the breast area, you can do gentle strokes in an upward fashion toward armpit and clavicle. Under the breast go in the direction of the nearest armpit. Do not dry brush over the areola or nipple area.

5. For the abdominal area and brush up the right side then across to the left side and down to pubic area; so you are completing a full circle with the motions of ascending, transverse and descending colon. You can then complete the stroke by brushing down into crease of groin or inguinal.

6. Then stimulate the groin area, the crease that runs diagonal at top of the leg. You can then take the brush into the back flank and brush anterior (toward front of body into your groin area.) The same can be done with the buttocks. Do circular motions and then brush to the groin area.

7. Now that the inguinal area is brushed (groin area), start the dry brushing of the leg. Begin left leg at foot and brush circumferential to the crease of groin. Then move to right leg and repeat.

8. If you can reach back and back of neck, the bring the motions towards the front of the body. Either to the inguinal (groin), axilla (underarm) or hollow of collarbone.

All dry brushing should be directed towards the heart. Brush strokes can be

repeated 5 to 15 times. This can be done daily. If you have a pre-existing health issues you may want to only do the strokes 2-3 times a week to get started. Always contact a qualified lymphatic professional or your doctor with any questions or concerns.

When seeking out a good dry brush, one will usually find boar bristles or vegetable. I personally recommend the vegan/vegetable, as it feels better on the skin and is more gentle. You can visit my website at hoano.com to see some sample of dry brushes.

A Cup of Java: Caffeine and Women’s Health

Since moving to Los Angeles, I have become quite intrigued with drinking coffee. In the past, I wouldn’t get near the stuff because I didn’t like how coffee gave me the jitters. In reflecting on why I have become such a coffee lover, drinking coffee evokes an atmosphere of culture, like the European coffeehouses where artists and intellects join in conversation. Coffee also gives me a mild, yet stimulating euphoric high that provokes clear thoughts and motivates my daily tasks. Coffee fills an emotional void, similar to how emotional eating fills a void.

However, according to Dr. Laurie Steelsmith
coffee is a methylxanthine which is a compound that interferes with enzymes in the breast, resulting in fibrocystic breast condition. Reducing caffeine intake from coffee and chocolate can eliminate lumpy, painful breasts.” Though fibrocystic breasts are seen as benign, if not managed can result in more serious symptoms of the breast tissue. She also quotes that, “coffee depletes your kidney essence, leaving you more Qi-depleted than you were before you drank it.”

For now, I have decided to reduce my coffee intake to no more than 1 x a week. The emotional satisfaction coupled by the caffeine makes me think twice before making a cup of java. Instead, why not substitute that urge with lemon and water which is cleansing to the liver or a tea filled with powerful herbal nutrients. Loving oneself by making healthy choices for our body and mind requires self-discipline. This can be achieved through exercise, body and breast awareness,
affirmations, meditation, and journaling. Start by taking baby steps. The more I stay away from the craving, the more I am able to sit with my feelings and fill myself with a wholeness and joy that coffee is only masking temporarily.

My personal healing journey in honoring my voice has been reflected in my intimate relationships. I can remember clearly as a young woman in my first relationship, the moment in which I was presented the opportunity to use my voice. I was afraid to speak my thoughts, that this man was not the one for me for the long term, because I knew eventually it would take me away from him, who I was so comfortable with. I also made a direct correlation between the pain in my breast and the thoughts that were bottled up inside of me. So for the next two years I denied the voice of my heart and went on with the relationship. The discomfort in my breast became more noticeable and I sought out medical attention to find out the diagnosis of this breast pain. I was fortunate that my condition was benign, though I knew that I would have to be cautious of my stress level and diet. I knew for my own salvation I would have to make a change and honor this voice inside of me because I was lying to myself and my partner. The heart of the matter was speaking my truth in learning to love myself.

As I reflect on the high incidence of breast cancer amongst women in our society, I am guided by an inner voice that believes there is a strong correlation between benign and malignant breast related conditions and the inability for a woman to love and nurture herself. So many women are on the path of learning how to love themselves. We have issues with low self-respect, self-worth, self-image and self-esteem. This can result from our own karmic issues that we are here to heal, issues from childhood, perhaps the relationships with our parents or abuse.

According to John R. Lee MD, author of “How Hormonal Balance can Save your Life”, suggests that breast cancer can occur when one is not loving or nurturing themselves enough or not receiving nurturing from others. Christiane Northrup in her book our Bodies, Our Selves”,says “much of breast cancer is related to our need to be self-contained and self-nurturing.” John R. Lee M.D. quotes “a 1995 study said that breast cancer increased by almost 12 times if a woman had suffered from a major life episode including divorce, bereavement, or job loss in previous 5 years of Breast Cancer diagnosis.” He also says “that our own breasts can in turn attack oneself when we are not nurturing ourselves is a sign that we need to balance nurturing just like we would balance hormones.”

What lies behind a woman’s breast is her heart. The source of her love and strength. The breasts relates to the 4th chakra, our heart center. The metaphor of giving, receiving, and nurturing.Studies show the power the mind and emotions have in creating our physical health. Deepak Chopra quoted in 2008 at the Hawaii Convention Center that “there is a direct connection between our consciousness and biology. The molecules of our emotional brain attach themselves to the immune system. Our immune cells listen and participate in the conversation of our internal chatter. For instance, ‘I have a gut feeling or My heart is full of sadness’.”The messages that our body sends through disease may be a sign of a deeper wound that needs healing.

According to Chinese medicine philosophy, breast lumps and cancer are a symptom of a woman’s emotional stress and frustration. Honora Lee Wolfe in “Better Breast Health Naturally”, “states that emotional frustration, suppressed anger, and stress affect the free and uninhibited flow of liver and spleen qi. Because the qi move the blood and body fluids, either or both of these may become stagnant in the breasts. It is said that one can eliminate the root of the disease by keeping the heart tranquil and the spirit calm.”Christiane Northrup says “our every emotion, internal pain, thoughts, ideas, the food we put in our body and attitudes all have an effect on our health. Health is not just some external thing that happens to us, it is a manifestation of our lives, experiences, and emotions.”In her audio cassette “Creating Breast Health”, Christiane Northrup shows how unhealed issues of the heart may result in breast related conditions. Some examples are holding on to past hurts or resentments, relationship addiction (why a woman stays in a relationship that doesn’t support her), emotionally non-supportive or abusive relationships, fear of not being loved, or emotionally unavailable or not worthy or being loved.Chronic depression and the inability to release stuck patterns will inevitably create stress on the physical body.

How we cope with the stress is essential to the health of our physical body and well-being.How can we support our emotional well-being?

1. We must first recognize that there is an emotional issue that needs to be attended to.
2. The next step is to feel and acknowledge these emotions even if you do not understand them.
3. Set your intention to resolve to change the situation. This may mean forgiving oneself or another, loving oneself more, healing a relationship with a family member, loving the inner child in you that is calling for your attention or reacting to a situation or pattern in a different way.
4. Have a vision of the desired state you see yourself in and see if it matches your current situation.
5. Journey into Wholeness- open up to the resources of healing through journaling, affirmations, having a dialogue with your physical symptoms, one on one counseling, deep relaxation, regular exercise, good dietary habits, support groups, meditation, bodywork, and energy healing.

Creating a New Paradigm on the Cure for Breast Cancer

An article that provokes new insights and thoughts about how we can reduce breast cancer incidence through a new model of breast care that offers a holistic approach inspiring individuals to think differently in how we care for our mind and body.

Essential to every woman is the care of her breasts! Whether small or large, breasts enhance the beauty of a woman’s body. They symbolize nurturance, pleasure and love. We love the way our breasts look in a low neck line dress, their delicate bounce and delightful curves. Our breasts are precious jewels and they are ours to keep.

Breast Cancer has become an epidemic in our society. An important cause for awareness supported by non-profits, benefits, fundraisers, walks and lots of money raised to find a cure. These events and organizations inspire hope within individuals who may have known or lost someone to breast cancer or may even be a survivor. A hope that one day a cure might be found to eliminate this disease that takes breasts and lives. Though there is no accurate reason for the cause of breast cancer, breast cancer incidence is influenced by family genes, not having children before the age of 35, and taking birth control pills in the early 20’s. Other breast cancer risk factors include inadequate diet, environmental toxins, metabolic and hormonal imbalances, synthetic hormones, and chronic stress to our emotional well-being.

Our present health care system stresses the importance of early detection and breast screening through mammograms and breast self-exams. Mammograms are able to detect calcifications and lumps in the breast, though there is controversy about the effects of radiation on the breast tissue and the accuracy of these x-rays on women with dense breast tissue. Breast ultrasounds and MRI’s offer alternative screening options for women with denser breast tissue. I heard at one point the American Cancer Society was discouraging breast self-exams as a form of early detection for breast cancer screening. This concerns me because I feel that every component of preventative breast screening is necessary in helping us to detect if there is a lump in the breast. Eliminating breast self-exams disconnects us from our bodies making us completely unfamiliar with our breast anatomy while diminishing our innate intuitive wisdom which is a woman’s most powerful attribute.

Conventional breast self-exams are a powerful tool to learning what normal breast tissue feels like and to respond proactively when a change occurs. Most women that I have encountered are fearful when the topic of breast exams are discussed. We are fearful because we are unfamiliar with what normal tissue feels like and what we may discover. Empowering oneself by learning the structure and function of the breast as well being comfortable palpating the breast tissue will allow us to respond thoughtfully if a change occurs in the breast.

Many people believe that breast cancer is something external to us and a cure will be found to end it all. That we need to fight and beat this disease. What about embracing breast cancer and recognizing that one’s body is sending a message of an imbalance. That our health is not just some external thing that happens to us, it is a manifestation of our lives, experiences, and emotions. We know our bodies better that anyone and we have the power to change it.

It is important that we focus our energy, money and efforts in creating breast health. This means on a mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical level. Let’s stop waiting till we get breast cancer to take care of ourselves. Fortunately there is more awareness of how one can make healthy lifestyle changes in promoting breast wellness through articles in health magazines, the internet, wellness programs and organizations through cancer eliminating foods, low fat diets, green tea, flax, omega 3 fatty acids and exercise. The Breast Cancer Fund and the Campaign for Safer Cosmetic is working hard to create awareness on the plight of toxins in our cosmetics and personal care products. This awareness is the start of a global shift of consciousness as we rethink breast cancer.

In creating a new paradigm on the cure for breast cancer we must first start by:

1. Eliminating old stigmas from society, culture and our own personal experiences that has influenced how we view breasts. These old perceptions are based on fear and sexual objectification and are affecting how women think and care for their breasts. Women are afraid to touch their breasts for fear of finding something or if new concepts of touch are suggested that could benefits the health of breast tissue, women are hesistant because cultural programming considers this taboo. We need to recognize that breasts have specific health needs and are an appendage to a woman’s body for the purpose of nourishing a child.

2. To become aware of how our emotional well-being is strongly interlaced with our physical well-being . The power of the mind, what we feel and think about, our emotional stress and how we respond to it plays an important role in the health of our bodies.
